The theory of thermonuclear reactions and the pinch effect is discussed at some length. A toroidal thermonuclear reactor is designed which prevents contamination of the pinched plasma by the wall and stabilizes the pinched plasma. An internal winding is provided which creates a field component in a direction opposite to that of the axial magnetic field within the plasma, thereby producing a large shear in the magnetic field and stabilizing the pinehed plasma.
