OXIDES OF THE LOW TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF NIOBIUM AND TANTALUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4791957

Suboxide phases of niobium and tantalum were formed by heating the metals up to 300 to 500 deg C in an atmosphere of air or oxygen under normal or reduced pressure. The characteristic lattice structures of the suboxides are related to those of the respective metals. These compounds appear to have metallic character. It is probable that the chemical composition of one of these suboxides corresponds to the formula Nb/sub 6/O(Ta/sub 6/O). (auth)
