HYPOTENSION AND VASOCONSTRICTION IN ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Meditsinskaya Radiologiya (U.S.S.R.) For English translation see Med. Radiol., USSR

Angiography was used in experiments on dogs to show the relation between the quantity of circulating blood, blood pressure, and size of the lumen of large blood vessels of the extremities and pelvis. Such a dependence exists in heaithy and irradiated animals. A sharp constriction of vessels constantiy observed during the peak of acute radiation sickness is due to the l-educed volume of circulating blood. Vasoconstriction is viewed as a compensatory mechanism for maintaining an optimal level of the blood pressure in progressive hypotension as the result of reduced content of circulating blood. (auth)
