HIGH-PRESSURE GAS SCINTILLATION COUNTERS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instr. & Methods

Two high-pressure gas scintillation counters are described. Properties of gas scintillators which were studied with these counters include the variation of pulse height with pressure and the linearity of pulse height with energy. For purified argon, purified neon, neon-xenon mixtures, and helium-xenon mixtures the pulse height for Po alpha particles was observed to increase by almost a factor of two as the gas pressure was changed from 8 to 20 atm, then to remain approximately constant from 20 to 40 atm. From 40 to 170 atm the pulse height for a helium-xenon mixture decreased slightly as the gas pressure was increased. The pulse-height linearity for a filling of 42 atm helium and 8 atm xenon was investigated with T(p,n) neutrons. The pulse height corresponding to the maximum- energy helium recoils was found to be directly proportional to energy for the neutron-energy range 0.6 to 9.0 Mev. (auth)
