Construction and Study of a Gas Scintillation Counter; AUFBAU UND UNTERSUCHUNG EINES GASSZINTILLATIONSZAHLERS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4705247
A gas scintillation counter was built and the intensity of the impulses developed by Po/sup 210/ alpha particles in Xe, He, and He-Xe mixtures was compared with the intensity of the emitied impulses by these alpha particles in a CsI(Tl) crystal and their pressure dependence was measured. The gas scintillation impulses were optimally about a factor of 1.2 larger than the CsI(Tl) impulses. They had a rise time of 20 nsec. The smallest relative half width of the alpha peaks amounted to 5%. Further investigations covered the gamma sensitivity, the stability of the counter, and the influence of impurities. For investigation of the impulse intensity relation to energy, neutrons of various energies were bombarded on a scintillation gas mixture of He + 20% Xe. The intensity of the back-scattered helium nuclei in impuises emitted in the gas mixture was directly proportional to the kinetic energy of the particle. In the same way the intensity relation of the impulse, which was released by the He and Li nuclei from the reaction B/sup 10/ (n, alpha ) Li/sup 7/ in Xe, corresponded to the energy relation of the particles.
