REDUCTION OF NOISE IN THE 6342-A PHOTOMULTIPLIER

Attempts were made to improve the signal/noise ratio in the RCA 6342-A photomultiplier, with electrons focused on a plastic scintillator as the light source. A plot of noise rate and signai size vs potential on the focusing electrode showed that signal size is rather constant while the noise rate has a very pronounced minimum at an intermediate voltage. It is concluded that adjustment of the focusing electrode is important for low-noise applications of 6342-A and that part of the noise does not originate at the photocathode. (D.L.C.)
