PRODUCTION OF MIXED UO$sub 2$-ThO$sub 2$ PELLETS BY AIR SINTERING. Final Report, September 1, 1960 through September 1, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4790579
Sintering, both ln alr and in cracked ammonia, ylelded high denslty (more than 96% of the theoretical value) mixed uranium and thorium oxides. Slntering in air at l,600 deg C yielded solid ThO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2.3/ solutions. Sintering in hydrogen yielded solid ThO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/00/ solutions. The successful outcome of the sintering is conditioned by the selection of the raw materials. The mixed precipitates of ThO/sub 2/-U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ yielded remarkable results when slntered in hydrogen, the additlon of CaO made it posslble to reduce the temperature to l,400 deg C. The mixture of UO/sub 3/ and of ThO/sub 2/ is the most suitable for air sintering. An essential condition for the success of the sintering operation is a good homogeneity of the initial mixture. An lnvestigatlon was made of the influence of the shaping conditlons on the denslty after slnterlng and on the structure. The lnfluence of the content percentage of the varlous constltuentsn from 0 to l5% uranium oxlde and from 0 to 0.4% CaO was also lnvestlgated. (auth)
