The influence of additives on the sintering speed of thoria was studied. Sintering tests of UO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ mixtures produced by precipitation gave good results in both air and hydrogen. Sintering in air of mixtures produced by mixing ThO/sub 2/ and hydrated UO/sub 3/ resulted in densities which were higher as the uranium content was greater. The compounds obtained by sintering in air contained oxide in nonstoichiometric form. Extrusion of UO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ mixtures and sintering in hydrogen made it possible to produce sound rods of high density. (M.C.G.)
