Title: RADIATION SENSITIVE GLASS CONTAINING TRIVALENT CERIUM

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4790261

A radiation-sensitive glass for scintillation response to gammas and neutrons and Having many advantages over crystals and organic plastics may be prepared by incorporating trivalent cerium in certain alkali aluminoborate and alkali aluminosilicoborate glasses. The boron makes the glass a neutron detector. The effects of the glass composition on the pulse height of the scintillation response are discussed. The preferred relative glass composition is l mole Na/ sub 2/O + Li/sub 2/O, 0.25to 2 moles Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, 2.5 to 4 moles B/sub 2/O/ su 3/ + SiO/sub 2/, and 0.1 to 0.3 moles Ce/sub 2/ O/sub 3/.
