A method is given for improving the utilization of the core of a reactor which uses D/sub 2/O as the moderator. In this method, D/sub 2/O of commercial purity is used until the core reactivity falls to the minimum possible for reactor operation; the D/sub 2/O is then diluted with H/sub 2/O to permit further operation. The increase in core life obtained in this way may amount to 20%. (D.L.C.)
