A graphite moderator structure is designed which entails a simple stacking of graphite blocks without spaces therebetween, yet which does not create distortions under irradiation growth. The structure comprises a stack of graphite blocks which has recesses formed in their side faces so that contact between side faces occurs only over narrow contact bands at the ends of the blocks, and centripetal restraint means acting at the planes of the contact bands is provided around the structure. Thus, even under conditions of non-uniform growth of the blocks, the continuity and integrity of the fuel channels are unimpaired. (D.L.C.)
