A graphite moderator structure for use in a reactorpowered ship is designed with compensation for Wigner growth. The structure comprises layers of graphite blocks alternating with layers of graphite tiles. The blocks have minimum Wigner growth in the directlon of their length, and the tiles have minimum Wigner growth in a direction perpendicular both to that of minimum Wigner growth in adjacent tiles and to the length of the blocks. After irradiation, the side faces of the tiles remain in contact, although their axes move apart. Centripetal restraint means is provided for each layer of tiles. (D.L.C.)
