POLARIZATION OF ELASTICALLY SCATTERED NEUTRONS

Journal Article · · Dissertation Abstr.
OSTI ID:4789548
The polarization produced in elastic scattering of 1.509 Mev neutrons from 18 medium and heavy-weight nuclei was measured. The Li/sup 7/(pn)Be/sup 7/ reaction was used as a source of polarized neutrons. Right-left asymmetry in the scattering of the neutrons was measured for scattering angles of 51.5 deg . The detection system employed pulsed-beam time-of-flight techniques with neutron- gamma ray discrimination. For medium-weight nuclei (A near 100) the observed polarizations vary smoothly with atomic weight; the polarizations of the heavy- weight nuclei (A near 200) show considerable scatter. The observed polarizations are compared with values calculated from a complex potentlal model (square well) to which a spin-orbit potential was added. The calculated polarizations are discussed with reference to variations in the parameters of the potential. It was found that without introducing arbitrary variations in the parameters of the complex potential it is not possible to obtain simultaneous agreement between experimental and calculated values for both the medium and heavy-weight nuclei. However, reasonable agreement was obtained by employing slightly different parameters for the two regions of atomic weight. (auth)
