A simple complex potential was used for describing He/sup 4/(p,p) scattering at 1 to 40 Mev, and comparisons are made of theoretical and experimental data on proton cross sections at 7.5, 17.84, 39.8, and 1.49 Mev. The results showed a satisfactory complex potential interpretation at 7.5 to 18 Mev. Discrepancies are quite obvious at energies above 18 Mev and below 7 Mev. Parameter correlations for the He/sup 4/(p,p) scattering potential, V/sub 0/ = - (32) to (42) Mev and W/sub 0/ = -(5) to (3) Mev (V/sub 0/ and W/sub 0/ are the real and imaginary parts of the potential, respectively), correspond to proton and neutron scattering on heavy and medium nuclei and show that V/sub 0/ for proton scattering on light nuclei coincides with V/sub 0/ for proton and neutron scattering on heavy nuclei while W/sub 0/ is somewhat smaller. That is in good agreement with data on proton and neutron cross section variations with target mass. Thus it is shown that an optical model can also describe proton scattering on light nuclei.
