The direct-cycle, natural-circulation, boiling-watercooled Humboldt Bay Power Reactor is placed in a dry well designed to withstand the rnaximum credible internal pressure. The dry well is vented to a pool of cool water by vent piping having large flow area. The water pool is located in a vapor-tight pressure- suppression chamber containing a large air volume. In the event of a primary system rupture, steam from the reactor discharges into the water pool; the steam is thus condensed rapidly and completely in the suppression pool, and relatively low dry-well and chamber pressures are thereby maintained. The design and development of this pressure suppression system is detailed. (T.F.H.)
