Cæsium-134 in Man
A 0.80-Mev peak or burnup was found in the whole-body gamma spectra of a large number of Swedish and Finnish Lapps. This peak was not found in the spectra of Swedes from the Stockholm and Lund areas, and the peak in Lapps is ascribed to their reindeer meat diet. The half life of the peak was found to be 2.4 plus or minus 0.5 yr, and the gamma-gamma coincidence net spectrum showed two peaks at 0.60 and 0.80 Mev, proving that the 0.80-Mev peak is due to Cs134. Measurements on reindeer meat show that Cs134/ activity is ~1.6% of the Cs137 activity. The origins of Cs/sup 134/ in the biosphere are discussed, and the possible release of Cs134 by reactor accidents is pointed out. The radiation dose to man from Cs134 is calculated.
