The effect of various drugs on the sleeping time of mice 4 to 5 days after whole-body irradiation with 700 r was investigated. Sleeping time was markedly increased after irradiation with cyclobarbital, pentobarbital, thiopental, hexobarbital, hydroxydione, and tribromoethanol. It was slightly increased with chloral hydrate and methyprylon, but was shortened with urethan in comparison with nonirradiated animals. The changes in sleeping time depended on the irradiation dose and the interval between irradiation and testing. Doses below 700 r give shorter sleeping time with the effective anesthetics, and prolongation of this time was less when tests were conducted 2 to 3 days after irradiation than 4 to 5 days later. In contrast to results with whole-body irradiation, irradiation of the head with 700 r did not prolong sleeping time with hexobarbital although the same dose applied to the posterior part of the animals did prolong this time. The possible effects of anorexia in irradiated animals on this phenomenon were eliminated by infusions of glucose, which were found not to affect the response. This pnenomenon is interpreted on the basis of the slower degradation of the drugs in irradiated animals. Radiation-damaged liver cells presumably detoxify these drugs at a slower rate than cells of intact liver. (H.H.D.)
