COULOMB EXCITATION OF THE SECOND LEVEL IN SPHERICAL EVEN-EVEN NUCLEI (in Russian)
LEVEL IN SPHERICAL EVEN-EVEN NUCLEI. Yu. P. Gangrskii and I. Kh. Lemberg (loffe Inst. of Technical Physics, Academy of Sciences, SSSR). Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Fiz., 26: 1001-14(Aug. 1961). (In Russian) In spherical even-even nuclei, the second 2/sup +/ level is a factor of 2 to 2.5 higher than the energy of the first 2/sup +/ level. Since the cross section for excitation of the second level is low, coincidence gamma counting must be used to determine the cascade gammas. On obtaining the coincidence spectra, the energies of the first and second 2/sup +/ levels can be determined, and the probabilities for the cascade transition to the ground state can be calculated. Corrections must be made for inelastic scattering and double coulomb excitation, but these effects are small when N/sup 14/ ions are used to bombard the target. Data are presented on the excitation of the second level in the even-even isotopes of germanium, selenium, molybdenum, palladium, and tellurium on being bombarded with nitrogen ion having energies of 36 to 53 Mev. The energy values of the first and second excitation levels, and values of the B(E2; 0 yields 2) and B(E2; 0 yields 2') are given. The lifetimes of the transitions from the second 2/sup +/ levels are also presented. (TTT)
