COPRECIPITATION WITH URANOUS OXALATE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4787798
The coprecipitation of cerium(III) with uranium(IV) oxaiate was studied using dimethyl oxalate to precipitate uranium(IV) from homogeneous solution. A limited study was also made using scandium(III) and uranium(IV). These systems obeyed the logarithmic distribution law more closely than the homogeneous distribution law. The distribution coefficient was found to be functionally related to the experimentally determined first-order precipitation rate constants when a trace quantfty of cerium(III) was coprecipitated with carrier uranium(IV) oxalate. The coefficient lambda was found to be equal to K/sub T//K/sub C/ where K/sub T/, the fractional rate of precipitation of tracer, was determined in the presence of the carrier. The cerium(III)- uranium(IV) oxalate system obeyed a distribution law modified to inciude ion charge rather than the unmodified Doerner-Hoskins logarithmic distribution law. (auth)
