Schiff bases were synthesized by reacting an aromatic o-oxyaldehyde with a heterocyclic or aromatic amine. The schiff base and uranyl nitrate or acetate were refluxed 15 to 60 minutes in an alcoholic medium to form the uranyl schiff base complex. The compounds are poorly soluble in water or the usual organic solvents, but are soluble in absolute dioxane. A sharp increase in the molar absorption coefficient is observed as compared to that of the uranyl ion. Complexes with the azomethenyl group in the 2 position of the pyridine nucleus are tbe most stable. An electronographic study showed that these compounds are crystalline. Thirteen uranyl schiff base complexes were synthesized, and their properties are listed. (TTT)
