PHOTOPRODUCTION OF PAIRS OF Pi MESONS FROM DEUTERIUM
A high pressure diffusion cloud chamber was used in conjunction with an external gamma-ray beam of an electron synchrotron to investigate the photoproduction of pairs of pi mesons from deuterium. A 1040 Mev bremsstrahlung beam from the synchrotron was passed through the diffusion chamber, which was filled to 20 atmospheres with low-tritium-content deuterium gas, and 2 inelastic and elastic pair production reactions were detected and studied. The results of the analysis of 137 such events are reported. 133 examples of the inelastic processes were observed and four cases of the elastic reaction were also seen. By application of the spectator model, the inelastic production events were interpreted as cases of pair production from single nucleons; gamma + p yields pi /sup +/ + pi /sup -/ + p, denoted +--(p); gamma + n yields 4pi/sup +/ + pi /sup -/ + n, denoted +-(n); and gamma + n yields pi /sup 0/ + pi /sup -/ + p, denoted O--(n). It was then determined from a detailed consideration of the event kinematics that the data consisted of 37 examples of +-(p), 55 examples of +-- (n), and 41 examples of O--(n). The total cross sections for the three reactions are thus expected to be comparable in order of magnitude over most of the energy range 400 < E < 1040 Mev. Comparison of these observations with a measurement of the integrated photon flux passed through the cloud chamber showed that the total cross sections observed must also be nearly equal in size over most of the energy region investigated to the value observed previously for the photoproduction of +-(p) pairs from hydrogen (--6080 mb). The signiftcance of a large cross section observed for the O--(n) process is discussed in the light of several simple models of pion pair photoproduction.
