THE DETERMINATION OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM IN BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL BY NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS

Journal Article · · Clinica Chimica Acta (Netherlands)
Two procedures for the determination of sodium and potassium in biological fluids, by radioactivation analysis, were developed. In the chemical separation technique, samples of the order of 1 mu l were irradiated in silica capillaries. Sodium was measured selectively by gamma counting with energy discrimination, whereas potassium was separated as its dipicrylamine- or tetraphenylboron salt and counted with a G. M. tube. The method was tested on solutions of known content and applied to human blood sodium. Reproducibility proved to be better than 5% for sodium and better than 10% for potassium. When samples of the order of 10 mu l were available, the determination of both elements was possible without chemical separation. Samples and standard solutions were applied on a paper strip and irradiated. Direct and specific gamma -counting of the sodium and beta -counting of the potassium isotopes is then possible with a reproducibility generally better than 10%. (auth)
