Progress is reported on studies of the mechanisms of aromatic hydrogen exchange for tritium transfer from 1,3dimethoxybenzene, labelled in both the 2- and 4-positions, to HClO/sub 4/ at 25 to 45 deg C; and the isotope effects in aromatic hydrogen exchange for tritium and deuterium transfer from 1,3,5- trimethoxybenzene, labelled in the 2-position, to HClO/sub 4/ at 25 deg C in light and heavy water mixtures for tritium, and in light water for deuterium transfer. Methods used in the synthesis of pentamethoxybenzene and 1,3,5trimethoxy-2,4-dimethylbenzene are described. (B.O.G.)
