A furnace apparatus is designed for the production of UF/sub 4/ from UO/ sub 3/. The UO/sub 3/ is reduced to UO/sub 2/ by a countercurrent NH/sub 3/ flow in a first furnace and then converted to UF/sub 4/ by a countercurrent HF flow in second and third furnaces. A cooled conduit is provided between the first and second furnaces for absorbing the residual HF from the second furnace into granular UO/sub 2/. (D.L.C.)
