A method and apparatus for producing UF/sub 4/ by fluorination of uranium oxide are described in which UO/sub 3/ and U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ are agglomerated into pellets and passed into a vertical reducing tubular oven where it falls in counterflow to the NH/sub 3/ + H/sub 2/ reducing gases and then passed in a similar manner into a fluorinating oven in counterflow to HF gas. The reducing and fluorinating gases are kept from mixing by a N/sub 2/ flow at the junction of the two ovens; automatic manometer means is provided for maintaining the N/sub 2/ pressure above that of the other gases.
