The Mossbauer effect was sought in a polymer with a specific weight of 1.2 g/cm/sup 3/, and a molecular weight of 2 x l0/sup 6/; the element tin made up 30% of the polymer by weight. A sample of SnO/sub 2/ containing the isomer of Sn/ sup 119/ served as the source of gamma rays. Resonance absorption spectra were obtained at three temperatures: 77, 195, and 300 deg K. Two lines of equal intensity were observed. These lines corresponded to velocities of 0 and 3.0 mm/ sec and had line widths of 0.8 mm/sec. The spectra can be accounted for by the quadrupole interaction of the Sn/sup 119/ nucleus in an excited state with the nonuniform electric field to be found at the positions where the tin nuclei are situated in the polymer. The probability for absorption of the gamma quantum without release was found to be 0.04 at 77 deg K and 0.017 at 195 deg K. (TTT)
