A system for controlling the reactivity of a reactor is given which introduces into the reactor coolant particles of neutron-absorbing materials, e.g., cadmium granules. These particles may be spongy for circulating freely in the coolant or of such density that they gradually accumulate at the bottom of the reactor for withdrawal. The control system is suitable for use in reactors in which the fuel rods are variable in position, such as described in British Patent 857,675. (D.L.C.)
