Results of tests run on the alpha-phase rolling, and the gamma-phase extrusion, of small-diameter uranium bars are outlined. Rolling tests are reviewed, and the effect on the quality of the as-rolled bars of such factors as rollpass design, temperature control, surface and internal condition of the billet, and variations in metal composition are reported. The results of tests on the finishing of the asrolled bars are also reported. Extrusion tests are also reviewed, and such factors as die design, die materials, and handling problems are discussed. The results of direct quenching of the extruded bars are also included. (auth)
