An analysis of a cross between Escherichia coli K-12 strains of different radiation sensitivities was made. The data indicate that hereditary determinants of radiation behavior are transferred during bacterial conjugation, the difference in radiation sensitivity in the parental strains is a multigenic phenomenon, genes capable of affecting x-ray survival can also affect UV survival, and the genes involved may be located somewhere between proline and histidine on the E. coli linkage map. The results are discussed in relation to data available for organisms derived from E. coli B. (auth)
