The Pacific International Center for High Technology Research (PICHTR) entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy and the State of Hawaii to design, construct, operate and evaluate a Biomass Gasifier Facility (BGF) at the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. (HC&S) Paia Mill on the island of Maui. The BGF program is a multi-phase effort that will initially demonstrate the direct gasification of bagasse for the production of hot, unprocessed gas. The BGF will install a specially designed gasifier, based on the Institute of Gas Technology`s (IGT) patented RENUGAS process, capable of gasifying over 100 tons per day of biomass. Construction the BGF has been completed and three test runs were conducted during 1995. PICHTR has teamed with HC&S, IGT, the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) and the R.M Parsons Co. on this project. This paper presents preliminary results on the operational experience with the key subsystems of the BGF as well as the overall system performance. Bagasse handling problems experienced and solved will be described. Test results from two of the three tests will be presented. Overall system performance (carbon conversion efficiency, through put, ash residue, etc.) as well gas composition is compared between two tests and earlier tests on a small scale test unit.
