The Pacific International Center for High Technology Research (PICHTR) has entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) and the State of Hawaii to design, construct, operate, and evaluate a Biomass Gasifier Facility (BGF). PICHTR has teamed with the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (HC&S), the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) of the University of Hawaii, the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), and the Ralph M. Parsons Company on this demonstration project. PICHTR has initiated a multi-phase program to scale-up biomass gasification for the production of electrical power and transportation fuels. Phase 1 is currently underway to design, construct and initiate operation of the facility. Follow-on phases of this project include upgrading the gas product to use in a gas turbine-electrical generator (Phase 2) and the catalytic conversion into fuel-grade methanol (Phase 3). The outcome of the overall program is expected to lead to an economically viable, commercial-size facility for the production of both electricity and methanol. This paper will status the program and facility hardware sub-systems. Configuration and operational ranges will be described. Permitting and environmental issues related to the IGT Renugas gasification process will be presented. Preliminary results of the initial gasification test results will be discussed. A synopsis of the program`s next phase will be presented.
