A pyrometallurgical process is given for separating U values from alloys or compositions containing U and Al. The process comprises heating a mixture of the composition and Mg or Mg--Zn containing at least 20% Mg to form a precipitate of U--Al alloy in a Mg alloy melt, separating the precipitate from the melt, and treating the precipitate with Mg and/or Zn to remove the Al therefrom. Several examples of the application of the process to spent fuel alloys are given. (D.L.C.)
