A pyrometallurgical process is outlined for processing alloys containlng U and Al, such as spent reactor fuel. The process comprises forming a melt of U, Al, and Mg, wherein all of the U is present as a precipitate of UAl/sub 2/ and/or UAl/sub 3/. The precipitate is separated from the melt nt a temperature less than 100 deg C higher than the solidification temperature of the melt, and may be further treated with Mg until part or all of the Al is removed from the precipitnte. Residual Mg may be removed by evaporation in vacuo. (D.L.C.)
