A device is designed for producing an energetic gas-fed arc discharge for dissociating a large percentage of molecular ions passed therethrough without large Bremsstrahlung energy losses. The device comprises an elongated hollow cathode and an anode, means for evacuating the region between the electrodes, means for establishing a magnetic field between the electrodes, means for feeding gas to the cathode interior, means for inititating an arc discharge, and means for coollng the electrodes. The device may be used in a thermonuclear reactor. (D.L.C.)
