URANIUM DIOXIDE AS A REACTOR FUEL. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS (in German)

Journal Article · · Atompraxis (West Germany) Incorporated in Kerntechnik
OSTI ID:4783559
A review is made of the most important properties of uranium dioxide, alternative methods for the preparation of UO/sub 2/-powder, and its manufacture into reactor fuel. ASEA's facilities for UO/sub 2/-powder production, compacting and sintering are described. In this connection fuel quality and manufacturing experiences are discussed. A total of approximately 20 tons of sintered UO/sub 2/ pellets has been manufactured with a yield of 92 to 95%. The average pellet density, during a considerable production period, was 10.58 g/cm3. Finally, the costs for fabrication of UO/sub 2/-fuel are discussed. (auth)
