PRODUCTION SINTERING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE

Journal Article · · Res.
OSTI ID:4764071
A plant for the manufacture of sintered UO/sup 2/ pellets for use in nuclear reactors is described. UO/sub 2/ powder and lubricant are mixed, pressed, and sintered at about 1700 deg C to a density of up to 98 per cent of the theoretical density. The pellets are ground to close diameter tolerances before being inserted into the fuel-element canning tubes. Some results are also presented in the paper from the development started at ASEA in 1957 with the object of evolving methods and equipment for the manufacture on production scale of sintered UO/sub 2/ pellets. In addition, checking and analytical methods are briefly discussed, and some results and experience from the manufacturing of, for example, about 12 tons of UO/sub 2/ pellets for the Swedish R3/Adam reactor are presented. Finally, comments are made on protection measures and health control. (auth)
