Subroutine INPUT, and the subsidiary subroutine LISTIN, offer an opportunity to standardize the input formats on most, if not all, FORTRAN programs. The generalized input routine originally read only data stored in COMMON. it was extended so that it may be used to read any data. COMMON data input preparation, data input to absolute locations, data input to relocatable locations, programming to use the input routine, and making up input instructions are discussed and examples are given.
