SLOWING DOWN OF NEUTRONS IN BERYLLIUM INCLUDING THE EFFECTS OF THE (n,2n) AND (N,$alpha$) REACTIONS

For fission neutrons slowing down in an infinite homogeneous beryllium moderator, the calculation of the slowing down spectrnm is complicated by the occurrence of (n,2n) and (n, alpha ) reactions for neutrons with energies above the respective reaction thresholds. Thus, a neutron balance equation for the calculation of the collision density as a function of energy when the effects of the threshold reactions are included is set up and solved. An important quantity for use in reactor calculations, the neutron enhancement in beryllium, was obtained from the basic calculations on the slowing down spectrum. The collision density, neutron emission spectra, and neutron enhannement, as functions of energy, were obtained by solving the slowing down integral equation numerically, using a digital computer. The final formulation given could be adapted to use revised information to be expected when more accurate experimental data on the (n,2n) reaction becomes available. The effects of anisotropy in the elastic scattering were taken into account. It was assumed that the neutrons from the (n,2n) reaction are emitted with spherical symmetry in the certer-of-mass system. (auth)
