THE ENERGY SPECTRUM OF FISSION NEUTRONS SLOWING DOWN IN CARBON

Journal Article · · J. Nucl. Energy, Pt. A ; B
The equation for the slowing down of fission neutrons in an infinite homogeneous medium is solved numerically for carbon by expanding the integral term approximately using Weddle's rule. A recurrence relation for the collision density is then obtained. The effects of anisotropic elastic scattering are included using recent experimental data. The calculated collision density spectrum is thought to be reasonably accurate up to 2 Mev, although at higher energies uncertainties in experimental data cause large probable errors. The effect of inelastic scattering is examined by regarding it as an absorption process and found to be significant above 2 or 3 Mev, but less important thand the effects of anisotropy. (auth)
