In order to avoid a graduated variation of the reactivity from the reactor zones occupied by control rods to the zones not so occupied, control rods are provided each passing through the whole length of the reactor core and occupying this whole length in all positions. The rod, comprising neutron absorbent material, has a graduated or a conical shape. According to another embodiment, the rod comprises two conically shaped portions joined together at their narrow ends, one portion enclosing neutron absorbing material, the other fissile material.
