Prismatic or hollow cylindrical pieces are described which consist of a core of natural graphite and a jacket of syrthetic graphite. Thus the good mechanical properties of synthetic graphite and the low permeability and high density of natural graphite are combined. The pieces are manufactured either by compacting natural graphite powder in the synthetic graphite jacket under vacuum or by extending natural graphite powder and inserting the thus formed cylinder in its jacket. An apparatus for the first method of manufacture is described. The pieces are applied as a building element for reactor moderators or reflectors, (NPO)
