A shut-down device for reactors is described which comprises a plurality of neutron-absorbing, magnetic balls held in a tube above the reactor by magnetic forces. The balls may be released into the reactor by demagnetizing the magnetic means, and the magnetic means may be made out of a material whose Curie point is exceeded when the maximum safe operating temperature is exceeded.
