A method was developed for the determination of boron in uranyl nitrate solutions. The boron is separated from uranium and other impurities by distillation of methyl borate. It is determined absorptiometrically by means of curcumin in the presence of orthochlorophenol, perchloric acid, and acetic anhydride. The limit of detection is judged to be not greater than 0.05 mu g, but is dependent on the purity of the reagents used. The coefficient of variation on 210 results at the 0.2 mu g boron level was 26% with a bias of -25%. The method may be applied to depleted uranyl nitrate solutions and uranium slag recovery liquors.
