A shielded refueling machine for a nuclear reactor is provided with additional shielding, which is attached to the machine so as to block the free path of radiation that otherwise escape between the machine and the charge face of the reactor. This additional shielding is attached to the machine by means of screw-threaded shafts and can be moved by rotating these shafts collectively. Preferably this additional shielding has parts that can move with respect to the other parts of the additional shielding into contact therewith. The additional shielding parts may comprise interlocking pads loosely secured to the remainder. (NPO)
