A device is designed for the emergency discharge of fuel elements from the base of a vertical channel of a reactor normally discharged from the top. The device comprises a support permanently fixed to the moderator structure at the lower part of the channel and leaving the channel outlet free; and a member disposed across the channel to support the fuel elements and provided with parts for locking on the supports and with at least one zone of weak mechanical resistance so that it can be cut to free the channel outlet.
