A device is designed for the emergency discharge by gravity from the base of a vertical channel in a reactor soon after the detection of fuel element failure. The device comprises a support permanently fixed to the moderator and leaving free the outlet of the channel, a member disposed across the channel andd locked on the support, means for supporting the fuel elements, and a zone of weaker mechanical resistance allowing the member to be cut and so free the base of the channel. The support is not damaged when the member is cut. (D.L.C.)
