A method is given for making graphite or carbon bodies with impermeable surfaces. The method results in bodies covered with a first layer of at least one carbide of the group Ti, Cr, Mo, Si, and Zr and with a second layer of at least one of the elements Mo, Cr, Ti, Zr, and Si and/or of an electrically conducting combination of one of these elements with N, Be, B, Al, Si, P, or C. Various ways of depositing the first and second layers on the bodies are given. (D.L.C.)
