CONCENTRATION OF Sr$sup 89$ IN COMMON BONE TUMOR SITES

Journal Article · · J. Lab. Invest.

tion in skeletal tissue, is known to produce malignant bone tumors in many species of animals. However, observed species and strain differences in the anatomical distribution of Sr/sup 89/-induced bone tumors have not been explained. E.g.. the concentration of Sr/sup 89/ in femurs as compared with tibiae is similar in mice and rats, but rats have mostly tibial tunmors, while mice have femoral tumors. This would suggest that local high concentrations, local metabolic differences, or geometric patterns may be more significant in the production of bone tumors than average concentration of isotope in whole bones. The specific activity of Sr/sup 89/ at selected bone sites was determined at intervals in mice and correlated with data on tumor distribution. This provided data on the redistribution of Sr/sup 89/ over the course of 120 days after injection. The relative concentrations of Sr/sup 89/ showed an in crease in the proximal fenrur and skull with time, no charges in lumbar anrd sacral vertebrae, and decreased concentrations in distal femur and proximal tibia. It would appear, therefore, that in nrice given 2.5 mu c Sr/sup 89/ per g body weight intraperitoneally, the sites of high bone tumor incidence were those which had a high Sr/sup 89/ concentration initially and which remained high during the course of 120 days.
