THE EFFECT OF THE NUCLEON-ANTI-NUCLEON INTERMEDIATE STATE ON P-WAVE PION- PION SCATTERING RESONANCES

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4779743

The integral equations for pion-pion scattering are set up from first principles and solved by iterating, using analytical approximation techniques instead of numerical procedures. The effect of the nucleon-antinucleon intermediate state is investigated by using first-order perturbation theory and then the limits imposed by unitarity. The result obtained from perturbation theory seems to predict a resonance, but this false resonance can be eliminated by unitarity considerations, The analysis is based on a partial-wave approach whose singular aspects are reduced by limitation of the study to S and P waves.
