MOLYBDENUM ALLOY EXTRUSION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. Seventh Interim Technical Engineering and Phase III Report, June 1, 1962 to September 1, 1962
Full length T'' shape extrusions of TZM were made within target reqilirements from 3200 to 3400 deg F billet heating temperature with a reduction ratio of about 19 : 1. High liner pressure in excess of 200 ksi was required to accomplish these extrusions, Surface quality was better than 150 RMS on full length extrusions. Few areas of glass or die coating rubin appeared but couid be removed by light conditioning. By careful application of the die coating, followed by grinding and polishing the coated surface to a finish of 100 RMS or better, striations were almost completely eliminated. Good die performance resulting in less than 0.010 inch run-out on full length extrusions was achieved with zirconia coated dies. (auth)
